Summer in the city

Between looking for a job and praying my crash-prone computer doesn’t completely jump the shark, the summer has flown by! I thought we’d catch up in a mostly pictorial fashion as I dive back into all sorts of Kansas City goodness.

First up? THIS.

I refer to it as The Holy Grail. Or Nirvana. Or, quite simply, awesomeness in a cup. Get yours at Christopher Elbow’s Glace Artisan Ice Cream, a sleek confectionery located just off the Plaza. And in case you’re wondering, I opted for a small cup with salted pretzel and fleur de sel caramel ice creams topped off with fleur de sel caramel sauce. Sure, I was floating in a sodium-induced haze for several days, but it was well worth it.

No summer is complete without an outdoor festival, and so far, I’ve attended two: the Downtown Kansas City Kansas June Fest and Columbia, Mo.’s annual Art in the Park festival. Although I had plenty of time to take in the sights, sounds and activities of each, I visited both events in an official capacity to help organizers take photos and video. The KCK June Fest included a car show, and I loved the vibrant red interior of the pictured car, not to mention the color-coordinated fuzzy dice!

When my friend and Ink writer Monica Watrous announced earlier this year that she secured a book deal, I knew she’d throw an awesome party to celebrate. You may have seen her weekly “Procreate” craft column in the pages of Ink, and her book Procreate: Easy Projects to Transform Your Home and Wardrobe is a delightful compilation of her favorite projects. We celebrated with cocktails and delicious food at one of my favorite KC watering holes, R Bar, and I couldn’t leave without the author’s autograph!

And last, but certainly not least (for this post, anyway) and arguably the highlight of my summer:

Yep, that’s right. At the end of June, Backstreet was BACK when the Backstreet Boys performed their first Kansas City concert in 5 (!!!!!!!) long, torturous years. I can hear you mocking me through the computer screen, and I’m completely fine with that. As an obsessed Backstreet Boys fan since 1997, I’m used to the jokes, sighs and eye rolls that result from my vocal admissions of love for the BSB. They rocked the Midland Theater with a steady stream of hits (both old and new) and, much to the shock of our section’s usher, I happily performed the “Larger than Life” dance in sync with the Boys (no pun intended.) Come back soon, BSB!!!

The summer’s only halfway over, so you know there’s more to come. In the meantime, let me know what you’ve been up to so far this season, and don’t forget–this week continues one of my favorite Kansas City traditions, the Fringe Festival! Head out and immerse yourself in some amazing local art.

Exciting book news!

I’m back with a bang, people, and just in time to deliver some happy, Moon Kansas City-related news!

If you’re so inclined, please hop over to Moon.com and read my just-released author Q&A, during which I extol my love of Kansas City and provide numerous travel tips and recommendations.

Once you’re done reading the Q&A and are simply overflowing with enthusiasm for all things KC, won’t you be so kind as to save the date for my first book appearance? I’ll be at the North Kansas City Library at 6:30p next Thursday, June 24, to discuss the book, some of KC’s best-kept secrets and more. Psst – there may even be a game. With prizes.

I’ll return later tonight with all sorts of bloggy goodness – we have a lot to catch up on, and I’ll also have photos from tonight’s book signing with a great friend and fellow author, Ink magazine’s own Monica Watrous, for her crafty tome Procreate: Easy Projects To Transform Your Home And Wardrobe. Stop over and see her at R Bar tonight (4:30-6p) and while you’re there, try my new favorite cocktail: the Monk’s Cup. No, it’s not on the menu, but just ask Arturo–he’ll know.
