There seems to be no shortage of literary events in Kansas City right now, and my inner bookworm is overjoyed with the chance to connect with and listen to so many fantastic authors!
You’ve already heard about my evening with three local writers, an event followed a mere four days later with the appearance of Candace Bushnell, a.k.a. one of my idols.
Haven’t heard of Candace, you say? On the contrary, my friend–she wrote a little book that spawned this TV juggernaut…
After a hiatus, Candace recently sashayed back on the literary scene with her new young adult novel, “The Carrie Diaries,” which follows the impossibly adorable Carrie Bradshaw through the choppy, shark-infested waters of her senior year of high school. Thanks to my favorite local bookstore, Candace settled in at Unity Temple for a frank, informative Q&A followed by a book signing.
As she came out on the stage, I was thrilled to see her in person, a thrill that increased exponentially when I saw her shoes. I have high standards, people, and if you created the SATC women and wrote several other books about glamorous, high-powered females (including “Lipstick Jungle”), you’ve got to look the part.
A slightly closer look at Candace’s impossibly awesome footwear …
Sigh. Candace regaled us with a story of receiving a personal summons to Manolo Blahnik’s studio in London during the height of “Sex and the City’s” popularity. She was told to pick out several pairs of shoes but left with two pairs–albeit the two most expensive pairs in the boutique, including a blue, bejeweled pair that she says is quite similar to Carrie’s blue wedding shoes in the movie.
A delightful time was had by all, especially when I left with this:
Come back soon, Candace!
P.S. The literary lovefest continues next week when I travel to the Kansas City Public Library (downtown branch) to hear friend and freelance writer Jonathan Bender regale the audience with tales of LEGOs. Stay tuned!
